What is Compounding?

Pharmaceutical compounding is a custom and unique approach towards creating a personalized medicine to fit the individual needs of the patient. Compounding pharmacists combine a mixture of specific ingredients in the exact strength and dosage amount to fill the doctor prescribed medication. Compounding is advantageous for several reasons but most essential when an individual’s needs cannot be met by commercial medications.

Compounding is prescribed for various reasons, such as to change the form of the medication from a solid to a liquid, to avoid ingredient(s) the individual is allergic to, or to obtain proper dosage amounts.

History of Compounding

Prior to commercial medications becoming readily available, compounding was common practice among pharmacists. Pharmacists were once trained to compound for major pharmaceutical companies but were unable to do so efficiently on a small scale. As a result the modern pharmaceutical industry was born due to economies of scale, rather than lack of skill or knowledge.

Beginning in the 20th century the US government created more regulation to oversee the practice of medicine. With these new regulations drug companies would have to prove the safety of any new medications brought to market. Through the discovery of modern drugs such as penicillin and new marketing techniques the pharmaceutical industry immensely expanded.

Today experienced compounding pharmacists are much less common, however a considerable need still exists for this specialized practice.
